STEAG Energy Services GmbH

Energy in retrospect

History

“Steinkohlen-Elektrizität AG” (which literally translates as “Hard Coal Electricity Corp.” ) was established in response to the heavy increase in electricity demand Germany saw in the 1920s and 1930s. In order to share in the opportunities opened up by the growing energy business, several mining companies in the Ruhr district combined their hard-coal based power generation activities in the new company.

Established on 20 September 1937 in the town of Lünen, the new company in short referred to as “STEAG” initially launched two power plant projects to meet the power demand of two planned large industrial projects in the northern Ruhr District. In the 1970s, the company added to its range of core activities the management of power plant by-products and wastes. This was virtually the hour of birth of Evonik Energy Services GmbH (formerly STEAG encotec GmbH), which at that time used to operate as “Energy Technology” sub-division of STEAG; since the year 2000, the company has been operating as an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of STEAG GmbH.

For over 40 years now, we have been a center of engineering competence, building up and enhancing our valuable know-how in all fields of electricity and heat production. We have contributed to the planning, design and construction of power plants (including associated infrastructure) with an overall capacity of more than 200,000 megawatts and in more than 50 countries. At present, we have a workforce of about 2,000, the majority of them engineers, technicians and scientists. They continually share their knowledge and experience and use the latest findings to develop customized solutions for our own power plants and for those of our external clients. Numerous patents granted testify to the creative power of our people.
