  • STEAG takes over second waste to energy facility from Vattenfall

Contractual closing for IKW Rüdersdorf completed // Employees will be taken over

Essen. With the contractual closing in Berlin today, STEAG has taken over all the shares in Industriekraftwerk Rüdersdorf (IKW Rüdersdorf), located to the south-east of Berlin, from power supplier Vattenfall with retroactive effect as at January 1, 2017. All the employees are to be taken over by the STEAG Group. IKW Rüdersdorf is the second facility to be transferred to STEAG by Vattenfall. In January, STEAG had already taken over the Lauta Waste to Energy Plant (T. A. Lauta) in Saxony. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

For STEAG, thermal recycling of waste and refuse derived fuels is a familiar field of business. Since the commissioning of T. A. Lauta, STEAG held 25.1 percent of the shares (now 100 percent), and also operates the Leuna Refinery Power Plant, which generates electricity and heat from refinery production residues. “STEAG is a specialist in the generation of electricity and heat on the basis of non-standard fuels and demanding technologies. We have decades of experience in the operation of power plants, in optimization and the disposal of power plant residues,” as Joachim Rumstadt, Chairman of the Board of Management of STEAG GmbH, explains. “With the acquisition of these plants, we are on the one hand able to expand our portfolio with additional generation capacity suitable for base load supply. That also enables us to increase the share of CO2-free electricity and heat production in the Group’s portfolio. On the other hand, with this strategic move we are extending our business activities on the waste to energy market.”

All the activities related to the waste to energy market will in future be grouped together in a new subsidiary, STEAG Waste to Energy GmbH. The directors of that company are Dr. Christian Hower-Knobloch and Susanne Pietsch, both senior managers at STEAG GmbH.
